MTBF strategy on embedded systems

DAVE Embedded Systems has active projects in railways, military and other high end markets where quality in the process and in the product are mandatory. For these reasons, very often MTBF should be required for evaluate the reliability of an embedded system.

Mean time between failures (MTBF) is calculated typically on the finished product and/or on the electronic device used in the embedded systems. Some time also the calculation just for the SOM module is requried but this is not frequent.

In any of these cases, DAVE Embedded Systems uses the following criterias:

  • MTBF CALCULATION criteria CASE A
  • CALCULATION METHOD: MIL217F Notice 2
  • CALCULATION PROCEDURE: Part count + suppliers database
  • ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION: AUC - Airborne Unhabitate Cargo
  • FUNCTIONING: CW – Continuous Working
  • QUALITY LEVEL: FULL MILITARY

or these:

  • MTBF CALCULATION criteria CASE B
  • CALCULATION METHOD: MIL217F Notice 2
  • CALCULATION PROCEDURE: Part count + suppliers database
  • ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION: AIC - Airborne Inhabitate Cargo
  • FUNCTIONING: CW – Continuous Working
  • QUALITY LEVEL: FULL MILITARY

The reachable value, in these scenarios really depends on the application and on the desired value. DAVE Embedded Systems has developed an internal specific know-how to increase the MTBF value by acting at the schematic level and PCB layout level, in order to:

  • double check the design quality phase
  • peer review on PCB layout design
  • BOM adjustment

With this approach for high end products, it is possible to support customers in the design phase loop increasing the control about the design preventing any possible fault in the design flow process.
