Project CRYPTO

DESCRIPTION:
In the coming months, DAVE S.R.L. will release the first version of “ToloMEO,” a connected embedded system that enables a range of services from Edge to Cloud, directly available on the customer’s embedded device. ToloMEO is designed to extend the capabilities of the edge platform with cloud services and is divided into various modules on both the edge and cloud sides.

Cybersecurity becomes a crucial issue for Edge computing, as ensuring adequate security in a distributed environment means addressing risks related to data processing outside the network boundaries. Additionally, the introduction of new IoT devices increases the potential for attackers to infiltrate the system.

OBJECTIVES:

The project, with particular reference to the new “ToloMEO” solution—a prototype to be developed in 2024—has a dual objective:

  • To develop digital protection systems aimed at safeguarding production processes.
  • To enable, through new CYBERSECURITY solutions, the full exploitation of the potential inherent in IoT and Edge Computing systems, which allow remote monitoring and control of product operations, as well as the provision of new remote support services, including predictive maintenance.

“ToloMEO” will enable:

  • Customers to independently develop simple applications that integrate hardware and software from edge to cloud. ToloMEO leverages the power available on the edge board, such as graphic and video accelerators and machine learning modules, and extends them with cloud services;
  • Proactive monitoring of system performance in the field to identify issues and, through OTA modules, resolve or mitigate most problems without direct on-site intervention.

As ToloMEO is designed for regulated markets such as healthcare, data management is critical and requires multiple levels of protection and handling to achieve the highest level of security.

The project also enables a range of new services in the IoT domain and will enhance advanced services such as Secure Boot.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

To achieve the aforementioned objectives, the project will focus on creating advanced digital protection solutions capable of safeguarding production processes from potential cyberattacks. Given the heterogeneity and complexity of these processes, the project will need to define a plan to address issues, allowing for corrective actions and the development of security solutions with significant impact on processes and organizational structure.

Furthermore, the project will equip DAVE with the necessary knowledge for future product developments. It will serve as a foundation for independently developing simple applications that integrate hardware and software from Edge to Cloud, and for proactively monitoring system performance in the field to identify and resolve issues via the OTA module, minimizing the need for direct intervention. Most importantly, it will act as an infrastructural boost in the market, as the current situation reveals a significant lag in IT infrastructure evolution compared to the company’s rapid growth.

The project will also enable:

  • Technological advancement to achieve ISO 27001 certification;
  • Strengthening DAVE’s ability to continue collaborating with research institutions (through theses, internships, and Horizon projects) as a technological partner offering a suitable (secure) infrastructure for research.
